Cassie rolled over and checked the time. Midnight. Sheâd been trying to fall asleep for a couple of hours. The Advil had cut the headache, but her mind kept racing like a hungry rat chasing a block of cheese in a familiar maze.
The cops had come, done a walk-through, asked a few questions, and left. As she thought, they assumed Kevin had done it. Later, sheâd gone with Pierce into the garage and found some wood, and together they nailed a board over the broken window. The pounding of the hammer matched the pounding in her right temple.
Heâd retrieved the dog food and bowls from his car. While Sundance crunched on his kibbles, Pierce asked her if she needed something to eat. âNot hungry,â sheâd insisted, then informed him he could help himself to anything in the kitchen. âAnd oh, in the freezer youâll find an assortment of frozen muffins and cupcakes.â
Sheâd shown him the hall closet where she kept her extra pillows, blankets, and sheets. âThe sofa is going to have to do.â Sheâd never bought beds for the extra bedrooms. Why should she? She had no out-of-town family or friends from her past to show up for a weekend visit.
Afterwards, she barricaded herself in her room and did enough tossing and turning to meet the standards for a cardio workout.
Pierce Jacobs was in her house, on her sofa, sleepingâor maybe not sleeping. She didnât know. There was a lot she didnât know. Was he married? No wedding ring didnât mean shit. His saying heâd sleep with her didnât mean shit. Men cheated. Which was shit.
If not married, had he ever tied the knot? Had he met someone he cared enough about to actually meet their parents? Was he divorced? Was he having a lurid sexual fling with Carlosâs mom, the wife of his departed friend? Being nice to a child so that child wouldnât prevent him from sleeping with his mom wasnât above most red-blooded men.
Questions. Thousands of questions raced alongside that hungry rat.
Why had he quit the force?
What had honestly motivated him to come find her?
Did he⦠Did he still sleep in the nude?
Flinging the covers off, she got up. Still dressed, because no way, no how, was she getting naked with him around. She stared at her bare feet and realized she didnât know why sheâd gotten out of bed.
Flustered, she decided to go pee. As if emptying her bladder might stop the assault of questions. When she came back, she went to the door to listen. Maybe he snored now? Heavy, honking snores of a middle-aged man. He was, after all, likeâ¦thirty-six. Two years older than her.
She pressed her ear to the door. No snoring, but she heardâ¦footsteps and faint kitchen clinking and clanking. Was he cooking?
She eased the door open a mere inch. The sizzle and the awesome aroma of bacon reached her senses and her empty stomach. Maybe that rat wasnât the only one hungry. But that wasnât important. It was midnight, for Godâs sake, and the man was frying bacon in her kitchen.
